Sanna Marin

– He should have been more careful. This is what Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in an interview with YLE Wednesday evening.

The Finnish Prime Minister’s nightclub visit on Saturday night has been the big issue in Finland in recent days.

This does not mean that a politician is forbidden to walk around the city.

But because it happened at the same time she was informed of her possible exposure to covid-19 the day before.

Foreign Minister injured

Prime Minister Sanna Marin attended a meeting on Friday, 3 December, which was also attended by Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. Haavisto then tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

Sanna Marin was informed of this on Saturday night.

But the first message, which she received via the Prime Minister’s official phone, was that it did not mean that she had to self-isolate, as she had been vaccinated twice against the virus.

When she later went to a nightclub in Helsinki, she had left her work phone at home.

So she hasn’t received a new message from her staff that she still has to self-isolate.

The Prime Minister did not receive any advice

The Finnish government itself has issued advice that if you suspect that you have been in contact with someone with coronary heart disease, you should avoid contact with others until you have been tested.

Sanna Marin told the Finnish press on Wednesday night that she had not received that recommendation.

But, she added, she had no excuse for doing what she did when she went to a nightclub and stayed there for several hours.

What happened in Finland has features in common with what is now known as the “Christmas table scandal” in the UK. But Sana Marin opted for a somewhat more modest approach than her British colleague Boris Johnson did.

You take responsibility for what you did

– I should have known the advice. Marin, who apologized for not following the advice she was responsible for as prime minister, said I take responsibility for the fact that I wasn’t aware of this.

36-year-old Sanna Marin of the Social Democratic Party became one of the world’s youngest leaders when she became Prime Minister of Finland two years ago.

She was held in high regard for her direct way of speaking, although there were also those who believed that in some contexts she had a poor judgment of how her actions were understood among ordinary Finns.

This was the case this spring, for example, when it was known that she had been given takeaway food for 150,000 NOK for the prime minister’s house.
