Anil Rachakonda, the head of developer relations at Project Ara, talks about developer incentive program – $100K prize challenge.
At the first Ara developers conference the first $100K prize challenge was announced. The goal of the prize challenge was to incentivize new entrances into the Ara platform and promote diversity.
The challenge criteria for new modules were the following:
– Would a typical user use this module on a daily basis?
– Does the module enable something you can’t do today with a smartphone?
– Modules were evaluated on the novelty of the idea or approach.
– The module must be functional and will be evaluated on the degree to which it adheres to the MDK specifications.
“We’ve received 75 applications. Only one third of them met the criteria of daily usability. Many applicants had really novel ideas for the functions that are not available in today’s smartphones. But none of the developers could demonstrate the solution for the function ideas and implement them in the module.”
“Now we’re extending our challenge. We are inviting previous and new applicants. The selection criteria are the same as in the previous challenge. Spiral 1 and Spiral 2 dev boards may be used. Please pay attention to deadlines. March 1st, 2015 is the deadline to apply for the prize challenge. Video of the functional module must be submitted before April 15th, 2015. On May 1st, 2015 we will announce the winners.”
