Horace Chen, Director of product management at Phison Electronics, talks about data storage modules developed by Kingston Solutions.
“Most of you are aware that NAND Flash is an active enabler of mobile storage today. All the new features in smartphones, like the 4K video recording or the slow motion video capture, make storage requirements higher and higher. The NAND Flash is the fastest growing semiconductor technology today.
Phison is a provider of NAND Flash controller and application solution. We have a wide range of controllers: USB, SD, eMMC and SSD. Today we are glad to be an active contributor to the Project Ara.”
“I’d like to introduce the concept of the UFS, high speed storage module, in partnership with Kingston Technology.”
“Let me give you a little background. Kingston is a worldwide leader in memory modules. In 2010 Phison formed the joint venture with Kingston called Kingston Solutions.
Today Kingston Solutions is delivering a wide range of eMMC and eMCP solutions to the mobile market for smartphones and tablets under the Kingston brand.
For the Project Ara our goal is to deliver high-performance and reliable SSD solution where Phison provides the controller IC (integrated circuit) and designs the module, while Kingston manufactures UFS package and also the Project Ara module.”
“The reason why the UFS is chosen over the existing eMMC is very simple – performance. As you can see current eMMC 5.0 standard tops at 400 MB/s, but the new UFS 2.0 (Gear 3, 2-lane) gives you transfer rate of 1.2 GB/s. That’s 3 times the speed of eMMC.”
“Moreover, the endo runs a UniPro switch, and the UFS is the natural choice because UFS is on top of UniPro making it the perfect fit.”
“Here is the system block diagram overview of the UFS storage module. The module communicates with UniPro switch through Spiral 2 M-PHY interface. We are expecting the module will have 64-128 GB of storage capacity.”
“We think this module should fit into 1×2 pack.”
“But smaller is better, so we are also shooting for 1×1 module. We think that this high-speed storage module is ideal for storing large media files.”
