Ming Tsai from InnoLux talks about display module developed for Ara platform.
“Let me introduce myself. My name is Ming Tsai and I am part Mobile Device Product Management. I am a manager of product marketing and I visit customers frequently.
The concept of building blocks like a jigsaw-like puzzle is exciting. But some things get easily broken, like displays for example. I would like to join the project so that displays can sell better than other parts. And of cause in Puerto Rico there’s a huge online presence with 77% of population, so about 2m people might buy Ara.”

“Let’s talk about Project Ara, which is a new way of thinking with focus not only on emerging markets. As you know the smartphone market is very competitive. If you make it cheaper, if you keep it interesting and fun, people may buy it. We can enable new entrepreneurs since there is a law of entry barriers in the market. The device has a longer lifespan since you can replace any broken part. It could reduce electric waste. Our company’s principle is to make ‘green’ products.”
“Let me show you a phone, it is a prototype with 4.5-inch display. It uses LTPS (Low Temperature PolySilicon) technology with IPS (in-plane switching). IPS is the most useful feature in mobile phones. It offers a wide viewing angle, narrow rim, and touch-screen capability. Innolux calls it TAD technology (touch and display). In fact, we sell about 10 million pieces with TAD technology. It also has a gorilla glass, which is laminated, it has low reflection rate so you can use it outdoors.”
“Let me explore the internal components of the module. A glass is covered with a plastic frame. Additional parts, like volume buttons, FPC sensors, microphone, main board are connected to PCPA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly).”
“So I want to show you how small and how easy it is to handle the phone. It is 4.5-inch, 720HD, with the display size 68x120mm. 5-inch or bigger phone might be the next to go about.”
“Let me talk about project development status. The first samples usually take 14-16weeks and mass production – 6-9 months. Based on the market demand we’ll have 50,000 units by June/July for the Project Ara. We hope it will be successful. The challenges now are different, we used to be B2B business, not B2C. Logistics handling is quite different and difficult, we can’t just send out 1 or 10 modules, we need to have a forecast for demand to support infrastructure for B2C market.”
