PuzzlePhone crowdfunding campaign is in its final stage with less than two days to go. However, the development of modular smartphone won’t stop after the campaign. Representatives of Circular Devices, the Finnish company behind PuzzlePhone, announced that they were planning to develop PuzzleLab in Oulu, Finland. PuzzleLab will support individuals, startups and established companies in producing their own mobile hardware – PuzzlePhone modules. Such business model will provide fast product-to-market access and rapid growth for new mobile solutions.
Oulu is a major tech hub in Finland with a huge amount of talent and facilities related to hi-tech. Some consider the city the Finnish Silicon Valley, especially for developing mobile handsets and devices from an idea to market ready products. The PuzzlePhone Research&Development is already involving several Oulu based companies, among the development and manufacturing partners that are based in Finland. Oulu will be the first city where the Finnish modular phone will be tested. The initial PuzzlePhone Pilot deployment will take place in 2016. The city of Oulu and its administration will be the first organizations to test the PuzzlePhone in a corporate and government environment.
“We believe in Circular Economy, and the simple yet efficient solution that PuzzlePhone represents by Design with its three easy to upgrade and replace modules seems to be the most realistic approach to date when it comes to eWaste and smartphones.” Says Alejandro Santacreu, CEO of Circular Devices. “PuzzleLab is an exciting initiative that will be extended to more cities in the future”.
