Guys at Slovak biotechnology company Vestigen have quite a remarkable idea, which they are presently implementing. They are creating affordable portable diagnostic and analytic devices for health and environmental monitoring.
The idea behind technology is the following. Someone who needs to perform a test should use a disposable strip containing a sterile microchip. The user inserts the strip into device, takes a sample of blood or water, puts it on the strip, and the device measures results of the electrochemical reaction on the surface of the strip. Then results are evaluated and the user obtains precise information about analysed liquid.
Monitoring health or environment will be possible anywhere, without additional tools, solutions or chemicals. Mobile connectivity between the device and smartphone or PC opens a range of possibilities for results visualization.
Vestigen has made its way from biotech startup to widely recognizable research company in very short period of time. It was founded by a few friends as a small venture in 2011. Today Vestigen is funded by Brazilian Grid Investments and partnering with Google ATAP team in their effort to create a modular smartphone. The device will be implemented into a single module of Project Ara phone. It means anyone soon will be able to have their own portable diagnostic laboratory as a part of modular smartphone for testing liquids, whether blood or water.
