In royal circles, there is a tradition of naming children after previous generations.

This is the “secret” name of the royal family


That’s what Caroline Vagle says. She is an expert on the Royal House of Se og Hør and says Princess Märtha Louise (50) was named after her grandmother, Crown Princess Märtha, and after her great-grandmother, King Haakon’s mother, Queen Louise.

While Crown Prince Haakon Magnus (49) was named after his great-grandfather, King Haakon. Both names are closely related to Norwegian royal history.

In royal houses it is common to have several first names – for example in English and Norwegian. This custom dates back to the 16th century and was a way to mark belonging to high-ranking families.

Salute to the great grandfather

Prince William (40) and grandson of Prince The Duchess Kate (40), George (9) are blessed with the full name Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.

In the history of the British Royal House, there have been six kings called George. The last of them was the father of the current Queen Elizabeth (96).

Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge

The daughter of Prince William and Duchess Kate took her middle name from her grandmother, Princess Diana.

At the same time, she bears the names of her great-grandmother, the current Queen Elizabeth and the wife of King George III, Queen Charlotte.

Shares middle name with dad

Prince Louis Arthur Charles Cambridge (4) is the full name of William and Kate’s youngest son. It is named after William’s great uncle, Louis Mountbatten, who was murdered in 1979.

Arthur is also William’s middle name. While he was his paternal grandfather, the Prince of Wales also bears the name Charles.

Prince Harry (37) and Duchess Meghan (41) have made several unconventional choices since their marriage. Choosing a name for their first born is no exception.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor (3) is the full name, but the boy bears the name Archie on a daily basis. The middle name Harrison can be translated as Harry’s son.

Harry and Meghan’s daughter, like her cousin, is named after her grandmother, Princess Diana. Her full name is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor (1).

Lilibet is Queen Elizabeth’s current nickname – something you often hear on the series The Crown.

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 49, have chosen traditional names for their children.

The heir to the throne Princess Ingrid Alexandra (18), believe it or not, is named after King Olaf. His baptism was named Alexander before he came from Denmark to Norway as Crown Prince.

Ingrid is an old family name on the part of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

– Sverre is an old royal name and a name used in the family of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, while Magnus is the name of the Crown Prince and many other royals before him. Only Prince Magnus is used on a daily basis; No Sverre, Vagle says.

Leah Isadora Behn (17) has an original name. In an interview with Aftenposten in 2005, her late father, Ari Behn, said the name was inspired by his fascination with dancer Isadora Duncan and Princess Leia from Star Wars.

“Despite the fact that the name tradition is long, there seems to be an increasing scope for choosing suitors these days,” says Fagel.

For example, Swedish Crown Prince Victoria (45) and Prince Daniel (48) were surprised when they named their daughter, the future Queen of Sweden, Estelle (10).

Princess Märtha Louise also chose unusual names for her, with the exception of the eldest daughter, who was named after Queen Maud.
