And so Roma’s strong stats continue without Mourinho on the sidelines. Until Sunday’s match against AC Milan, Roma had won all matches in which Mourinho was suspended and therefore never on the sidelines.

Last season they beat Spezia and Atalanta. Then they beat Inter 2-1 this season. Mourinho received a red card in the last league match in 2022, and Roma followed it up with a 1-0 victory over Bologna in the first match of 2023. Against Milan there was one point, and in the next round of the series, the Portuguese returned to the sidelines.

Here, Mourinho was sent off against Torino.

There was complete blazing right from the start in the first match. Even before the half-hour mark, referee Davide Massa had handed out yellow cards to Zeki Celik, Gianluca Mancini and Rafael Leao, respectively. You set the tone in a card-heavy match.

Half an hour later the first score of the match came as well. Pierre Kalulu broke the Milan stopper in the penalty area and hit the ball into the far corner from a corner kick.

There were never too many chances at the San Siro, but the home team secured their lead with a quarter of an hour remaining. Rafael Leao found Tommaso Pobega with a good pass, and the Italian did not make a single mistake with the goalkeeper.

Roma was pretty much toothless in the match, but in the end it caught fire. In the 87th minute, Roma centre-back Roger Ibañez scored the equalizer, before Tammy Abraham made it 2-2 three minutes into extra time. Thus, the two teams had to share the points, despite the dominance of Milan.

It’s a very small gift package for Leo Skiri Østigård’s Napoli. They now lead the Italian league with seven points behind Juventus and Milan.

Note: Ola Solbakken was an unused protectorate of Rome. Tronder is still waiting for his debut. Next chance is Thursday’s cup match at home against Genoa.
