Tabula Rasa is a Bergen-based vocal ensemble with the goal of promoting neoclassical acoustic music. The vocal ensemble works with improvisation and theatrical tools to create concerts and conceptual performances, and since 2017 has developed and contributed to a number of projects.

The Church Stave Song – If This Room Could Sing – is a collaboration between vocal ensemble Tabula Rasa, composer Jostein Avdem Fretland, and scenographer Matias Askvik. The band in this project consists of Sigrun Jørdre, Rikke Lina Sorell Matthiesen, Zsuzsa Zseni, Arild Rohde and Jakub Niedziela.

The project is based on a piece in which the composer develops the polyphony of pavement churches in a series of pieces. Together the composer and the orchestra will develop a concert in which the tingingswerk will intertwine folk music, early music and improvisation.

With scenographer Matthias Askvik, they will work in dialogue with the rooms of the old church to create an intact space where the audience can step out of everyday life into a state in which the many layers of time coexist. A room out of time.

Pastoral Church Songs are to be played in the churches and stave churches of the Parish and Bergen:

  • June 8: Borgund Stave Church at 19.00 and 20.30
  • June 9: Kaupanger stave church at 8 p.m
  • June 10: Hauge Church, Lærdal at 2pm
  • June 10: Hopperstad stave church at 7.30pm
  • June 11: St. Mary’s Church, 2:30 p.m

The concert is supported by the Council for Culture, the Norwegian Composers Fund, Lärdal Municipality, Bergen Municipality and Vestland County Municipality.
