Police received a tip at 6:20 pm on Thursday that a person had been killed in Boston, in Lincolnshire.
When emergency services arrived at the scene, it turned out that the victim was a child.
“Unfortunately a nine-year-old girl has died after what is believed to be a stab wound,” Lincolnshire Police said in a statement.
She was murdered on Fountain Lane in the middle of a small town on the east coast of England.
Police cordoned off both ends of an alley and said shortly before midnight that they would be working at the scene “for the foreseeable future”.
We’ve launched a murder investigation. The little girl’s parents have been notified and our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time. “Her family will be supported by specially trained personnel,” the police said.
City MP Matt Warman described the incident as “extremely shocking”.
I would urge everyone not to speculate while conducting this very important investigation. Warman says in a Facebook statement that it is critical that those responsible are held accountable.
