The Dutch authorities promised a full investigation into the cup semi-final crowd row between Feyenoord and Ajax. Davey Claassen suffered a bloody head injury there.
Wednesday’s match was stopped for nearly 30 minutes after an Ajax player, Klassen, was hit by a lighter from the stands. He had a bloody gash on his head and was substituted after stopping because he felt dizzy.
At the match, illegal fireworks were used and anti-Semitic words were chanted from the stands.
The Dutch Minister of Justice, Dylan Yeshelgos Zegerius, is stern and promises that the scandalous scenes will be investigated “at the highest level”. Sports Minister Connie Helder and the Dutch Football Association and clubs will contribute to the work.
The increasing problem of violence has plagued Dutch football recently. Matches between arch-rivals Amsterdam and Rotterdam have always been heated up, but Wednesday’s edition contributed to another step in the wrong direction.
Dutch football has reached a new low. The Dutch Football Association wrote in one of them that it was crazy that the players did not seem to be safe on the field statement.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also believes something must be done to overcome the growing problem.
There is no room for violence in football, on and off the field. I urge the current authorities to ensure that this is respected at all levels, he wrote on Instagram.
