Simon Cowell regrets giving One Direction the rights to the name

The music mogul who created the boy band is going to do something different.

Simon Cowell (64) brought the group together in 2010 on US show The X Factor.

He recently appeared on the podcast “CEO Diaries» with host Stephen Bartlett on YouTube, where he said he regretted letting the band own the rights to the One Direction name.

“The only thing I regret is that I should have had the name,” Simon said.

– They own the name. I could have done an animated series or something. So if you listen to One Direction, I will buy it back from you!

After the singing competition in 2010, he became the band's manager by signing them to his record label Syco Music.

The group, consisting of Harry Styles (30), Zayn Malik (31), Liam Payne (30), Niall Horan (30), and Louis Tomlinson (32), has become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

However, in 2015, Zayn left to pursue a solo career, and a year later the band disbanded for good.

Cowell says on the podcast that he plans to launch a new competition this year to find the next big boy band, because he believes no one has matched One Direction's success since then. This time he won't make the same mistake regarding the rights to the band's name.
