The United States will supply Ukraine with a Norwegian missile system

According to the source, this is a Norwegian advanced surface-to-air missile system (NASAMS), developed by Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace and produced in cooperation with the American company Raytheon.

According to the source, the missile system will be used for defense from the medium to long range.

The United States uses NASAMS, among other things, to protect the airspace around the White House and Congress in Washington.

President Joe Biden will announce the decision at the G7 summit in Ellmau, Germany, according to an AP source. The United States is also expected to deliver more artillery to Ukraine.

Ask for an air defense system

When Zelensky speaks to G7 leaders on Monday, he is expected to ask them to increase their support. In a televised address on Sunday, he emphasized what Ukraine wants most now.

We need a stronger air defense, a modern and effective defense. We need a system that can guarantee complete protection against missiles. We talk about this with our partners every day. Some agreements have been entered into. He said that our partners need to go further if they are indeed partners and not mere observers.

“Delaying the delivery of weapons to our country, and any restriction is in fact an invitation to Russia to attack again and again,” he said.

Training in Norway?

Liberal leader Guri Melby is among those who have demanded that Norway give NASAMS to Ukraine, and that Ukrainian soldiers receive training in using the system.

– It is very good if it is true that the United States will send NASAMS to Ukraine. She told NTB they needed heavier weapons to resist Putin’s war machine.

I hope this will pave the way for Norway to introduce NASAMS as well, which I defended earlier this month. The US delivery does not reduce the need for Norwegian support, says Melby, who believes Ukrainian soldiers could receive training to use the system in Norway.

Russia warns

Russia warned early Western countries not to supply arms to Ukraine and threatened to retaliate.

“Those who contribute weapons to Ukraine will be held responsible if these weapons are used during the Russian military operation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry in February. Interfax.

Russia invaded the neighboring country on February 24.

advanced

NASAMS is a mobile air defense system for medium-range missiles, connected to embedded radars and a control vehicle. When airborne threats are detected, one or more AMRAAM missiles will be automatically launched from the launch pad at the target.

The system is considered highly advanced and could be important in Ukraine’s defense against Russian air strikes.

AMRAAM missiles were developed by Raytheon and can be used as surface-to-air missiles in the NASAMS air defense system and as air-to-air missiles from aircraft.
