This phone will compete with Apple and Samsung

New mobile phone manufacturer Osom wants to challenge Apple and Samsung in the mobile phone market and is now showing its first images and specifications Android Police.

The company, which grew up in the ruins of Android founder Andy Rubens’ Essentials, eagerly showcased hardware design for its first phone, which they believe will be able to rival tech giants Apple and Samsung.

The company’s hardware division, which is primarily made up of former Apple employees, proudly displays the product and prides itself on its material choices the same way Apple describes its designs. The phone, which is coming in the second half of 2022, has a minimalist design with materials such as stainless steel, titanium and ceramic. Here we see that parts of the design philosophy from Essential were carried into the new company.

Pictures shared by Osom herself remind us of the only device that came out of Essential before the company disappeared.

Privacy Focus

One of Osom’s core values is that it focuses on privacy. It appears at some points when they now provide details about the OV1 phone. The most obvious place is the charging cable if it is included, and it has two functions to protect the phone user. One is a physical switch on the cable that turns off all data functions in the USB-C cable. It also has a small LED light that lights up green if data is being transferred. This is a cable that meets even the most extreme privacy requirements.

The Android version is the second point where privacy is visible. The company did not want to comment on Android Police about which Android version the phone comes with, as the launch time is murky and there may be more releases before then. However, they hinted on Twitter about the possible use of Graphene OS, a privacy-oriented version of Android, but Osom is not confirming any collaboration or information on this either. However, the company has stated that it will offer rewards to developers who find privacy issues or software bugs when the phone comes out.

Focus on the camera

Something Basic received a lot of criticism because when they came out with the PH1, it was the camera. Osom takes note of this and promises that the camera in the Osom OV1 will be of the highest quality. It’s an unknown statement from phone manufacturers, so here everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt before people can test the phone for themselves. But early specs may reveal a bit about the camera, although we don’t yet know what kind of image sensor the company wants to use.

Unknown processor

Osom won’t go into details yet on what processor the phone will get. They say it will be based on the Snapdragon 8 series, but they won’t give more details than that. According to Android Police, there are some leaks that indicate that there will be a powerful version of the Snapdragon 8Gen 1 processor today, which is the flagship from chip giant Qualcomm.

Awesome tells Android Police that the phone is expected to come out in the second half of 2022 and priced under $1,000.
