Two people were killed when Russia sent 40 drones towards Kiev

40 of the 54 drones sent against Ukraine were aimed at Kiev.

However, approximately two drones were shot down, according to the Ukrainian defence. The Ukrainians described the attack as the largest attack by Iranian-made Shahed drones since the Russian invasion in February last year.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, one person was killed and another injured by falling building debris in the attack, which took place in the Holosezhevsky district.

Reportedly, the remains of a drone fell into a gas station, and a 41-year-old man was killed. Klitschko said the attack also caused a fire in a commercial building in the Holosevskiy district.

– You are heroes!

President Volodymyr Zelensky thanks the Ukrainian Air Defense and Rescue Service.

– You are looking to destroy enemy missiles, planes, helicopters and drones. Every time you shoot down enemy drones and missiles, lives are saved. You are heroes! Zelensky says.

The attacks lasted more than five hours on Saturday night and Sunday night. Klitschko calls the attack “massive” and says the drones came “from several directions at the same time”.

Ukraine’s capital celebrates Kyiv Day on Sunday to commemorate the city’s founding 1,541 years ago. The day is usually marked by concerts, fairs and exhibitions.

– The history of Ukraine has always irritated insecure Russians, says Chief of Staff of President Volodymyr Zelensky Andrei Germak in his Telegram.

Escalation of attacks against Kyiv

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 54 attack drones have been launched from the Bryansk and Krasnodar regions of Russia. She added that the target of the attack was military installations and vital infrastructure in the central parts of the country, especially in the capital region.

It was the 14th time in May that Russia attacked Kiev with drones, according to the authorities. And the frequency of such attacks against Kiev is unparalleled. Until this month, DC was relatively spared the attacks of 2023.

Earlier in May, Ukraine repelled a large-scale Russian airstrike on Kiev when it shot down all missiles fired at the capital.

Ukraine’s air and air defense has been significantly boosted by the delivery of advanced Western systems over the past year.
