Remembers details of all conversations

The new functionality will enable Chat GPT to remember details across all conversations you've had with the talking bot, not just the details of the conversation you're currently having.

This way, the user will not have to repeat information that he previously shared with Chat GPT every time he is asked to perform a task.

Open AI also states that the user will have full control over the new memory function, meaning you can decide for yourself what the talking robot should remember and what it can forget.

For example, you can ask Chat GPT to remember a family member's preferences or interests. When you later ask the bot to help make a birthday card, these interests will appear as suggestions for how to decorate the card.

If you work as a teacher, you can, for example, ask Chat GPT to remember the preferred length of teaching hours, which the bot can use later when you ask it, for example, to make a teaching plan.

It develops over time

The user can ask Chat GPT to remember specific information, ask it what it remembers, ask it to forget the information, and you can also turn off the memory function completely if you wish. This is done in the settings menu.

Open AI explains that Chat GPT “memories” evolve over time with how you use the service, and are not tied to specific conversations. This means that when you delete a conversation, the memories won't be automatically deleted. This must be done manually by the user.

The new memory feature is initially being rolled out to a limited number of users for testing, and broader launch plans will be shared later, Open AI says.

It can be said that this function is a further development of the so-called “custom instructions” function that Open AI launched for Chat GPT last summer.

This function makes it possible to enter instructions, preferences and criteria that the talking robot uses as a basis when generating its answers. The idea is to provide context to the answers, so that you don't have to fill in all the relevant details every time you ask a new question or ask Chat GPT to perform a task.
