Crimea, accident |  30-year-old Irishman dies in a freediving accident in Øygarden

Just before 1700 on Thursday afternoon, emergency services received reports of a man missing in the sea at Little Bratholmen, just north of Anglewick in Liddlesotra.

Eventually it was revealed that the person had disappeared from contact .

Emergency services moved in with huge resources. At 1711 a rescue diver from the Fire Service found the drowned man at a depth of 31 metres.

Made a quick discovery

– On-site incident leader Ørjan Djuvik told BA that life-saving first aid was started immediately.

According to Djuvik, the person concerned must have been free with another person when he disappeared. The other freediver should have reported what happened to the police.

He was declared dead

The freediver was raised on a boat.

– Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started on the spot but unfortunately could not save life. The man was eventually pronounced dead, says Sven Erik Mittjell of the Askoy and Oygarden Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the deceased was a 30-year-old Irishman. Relatives have been informed about the death.

The deceased will now undergo a post-mortem examination at the Gate Institute. At the same time, the police have started an investigation into the horrific incident.

– We started an investigation, spoke to the other person who participated in the diving, as well as carried out investigations at the scene, says Ørjan Djuvik.
