(Elbil24):

Mercedes recently showed its latest concept car – the Vision One Eleven. The car, inspired among other things by the legendary Mercedes SL 300 from 1955, will show some of the technologies that Mercedes envisages in its cars of the future. Most noticeable is the car’s height of just 1.17 meters and the gull wing doors. But also when it comes to the interior, the engineers think it’s completely new.

Do you have an electric car from 2018 or 2019? Then you must take action soon!

As in the plane

The test car’s steering wheel is squared-off with so-called Yoke steering. This means that there is no longer any physical contact between the steering wheel and the wheels. The steering column has been replaced with electronic signals for steering wheel movements. Modern aircraft already many years ago used the steer-by-wire system to transmit signals from the pilot in the cockpit to the rudders on the wings.

In a car, this should have many advantages – also when it comes to road safety, engineers believe.

More safety in traffic

The steering wheel must provide a more precise and faster steering response and this means that the vehicle can no longer be steered with a relaxed hand on top of the round steering wheel. It is not particularly safe for traffic. With a square steering wheel, the driver must accurately hold the steering wheel with his hands in the optimal “quarter to three” position. In addition, the driver gets a better view of the instruments on the dashboard.

Can we believe the reports in the German media AutoImageMercedes plans to adopt this steering wheel in its new cars that will be launched sometime after 2025. It will likely only appear in the electric EQS when a new generation of this flagship is ready.

do we want it

Last year, Tesla announced that it wanted to equip its new S and X models with such a square steering wheel and electronic transmission of control signals to the wheels. However, the American automaker has gone back and offers a squared-off steering wheel as an option only.

Lexus and Toyota also announced that they will come with these steering wheels and the steering is very fast.

However, whether customers want it is a completely different matter.
