2023 DW: – An asteroid collides with Earth on Valentine’s Day

On the morning of June 30, 1908, a deserted forest area struck Tunguska in Siberia. Explosion with the power of 500 Hiroshima bombs.

Scientists believe that it was an asteroid or comet nucleus that exploded at an altitude of 5-10 km above the Earth’s surface.

It was said that three people died when 80 million trees were blown down in a radius of 2,150 square kilometres.

Now an asteroid of the same size is supposed to be on its way to Earth. NASA estimated its arrival on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2046.

Don’t expect any disaster

according to Wells Online The asteroid should be 49 meters in diameter, about the same size as the neighborhood of Asteroid 1908. At the time of writing, it is just under 18 billion kilometers from Earth.

NASA is skeptical that it would lead to a global catastrophe if it hit us.

– We have tracked a new asteroid called 2023 DW that has a very small chance of impacting Earth in 2046, reassuring the US space agency via Twitter.

The asteroid’s orbit has changed

When new objects are discovered, according to NASA, it takes several weeks to calculate the data to be able to reduce uncertainty and predict their future trajectory in an appropriate way.

NASA said: “Analysts will continue to monitor asteroid 2023 DW and update information about its orbit as new data comes in.”

Here they meet: NASA’s orbiter on Sept. 27 is the asteroid Dimorphos. This may mean that in the future the Earth may be able to save itself from cosmic bodies heading for the planet. Video: AP

In September 2022, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos.

The purpose of the test was to see if Earth could be protected from asteroids on a collision course. It’s the first time something like this has been attempted.
