Hovland started on the 10th hole and opened by two holes to par before the first bogey of the day came on the third hole after ending up in the water.

For the next four holes, there was one bogey and two more birdies, and Hovland came back to par.

But then the 25-year-old smoked a double bogey on the 18th hole: On the tee, Hovland ended up in the water again and had to drop the ball and take a putt.

After a half-played round, Hoveland was therefore two strokes at par, and after playing the last nine holes with two bogeys and two putts, it was also the end of the day.

Thus, after the first round, he has already gone nine strokes to temporary leader Jordan Spieth.

The tournament in Memphis is the first of three matches in the PGA Qualifiers, and for Hovland it might look really dark to get pole position this time around. Ekeberg boy is currently 60th.

The tournament ends on Sunday.
