Former pole vaulter Fabian Schulz has died after falling ill, the German Athletics Federation said.

It is not known what disease Schulz died from.

He left behind his wife and two children.

Almost a medal

Schulz was at the peak of his career in the mid-2000s.

His 5.83 meters was the best of his career – the ninth best in the pole vault in Germany.

He has come close to winning a medal several times in a number of major competitions. Especially in the indoor tournament in 2006, when he finished fourth.

With Schulz's death, the German athletics community is once again in mourning.
