Time magazine named the 100 best crime books of all time. Between Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, we find none other than Jo Nesbø.
– It’s great that you ended up in that company, of course. It’s a pretty formidable list of names, as Nesbo himself told VG about his selection in the big selection.
It’s a “Rødstrupe” book from 2000, the third in the series about Harry Hole, which will be set in… Time magazine’s list of the 100 best crime books of all time.
The book was translated into English in 2006 and won a number of awards: in 2000, Nesbo received a booksellers’ award, and four years later Nittiman listeners called the book “Tidenes norske krim”.
The committee believes the book may be as much a “crime thriller” as it is an “epic war novel”.
Nesbø says he doesn’t really know how important this award is to the book.
– “Rødstrupe” seems to already be a fairly well-established title internationally, and such lists are read primarily by crime fans, so it’s unlikely that there will be a wave of readers who think “Oh my God, I should check this out.” That,” he says. .
– But at the same time, I realize from the feedback that it is a notable list, so it might help give “Rødstrupe” a little longer life.
Many Nordic authors are on the list
Nesbo’s favorite works from the list are “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoevsky, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Arthur Conan Doyle, and “The Maltese Falcon” by Samuel Dashiell Hammett.
Several Nordic authors are also represented:
Among them is Stieg Larsson “Men who hate women” Camilla Lackbergs “Ice Princess”Danish Peter Haug is with him “Miss Smila’s Feeling of Snow” And Henning Manckles “Unidentified killer”.
The award committee consists of authors Megan Abbott, Harlan Coben, S. A. Cosby, Gillian Flynn, Tana French, Rachel Howzel Hall, and Sujata Massey. Together with Time magazine, they proposed books at the beginning of the year to have a selection of 250 crime novels that later became a list of the 100 best novels of all time.
No author has more than one book.
The list is arranged chronologically from the books’ publication date.
The first is then Wilkie Collins “The Woman in White” From 1860. The most recent book on the list is by Robyn Gigls “Survivor’s Guilt” From 2022.
