Author and environmentalist Sidcel Mork has died

Mork died earlier in March after a long illness, leaving behind a large body of writings, including collections of poetry, short story collections, novels and children's books – some in English. Verse form. She was also an active debater in the media.

She has won a number of awards, both for her writing and her strong commitment, not least to the environment. Most recently in 2013, she received the Osietzky Award, which is given to people who have made an “outstanding effort for freedom of expression.”

The justification stated:

“Sidzel Mørk has championed the key issues of his election campaign, environmental protection and women's issues, through the changing times and with varying levels of support and interest. It takes courage and endurance to stay in the fight for so long.”

Among those who paid tribute to Mork when her death became known were Zola Prize, on whose board she sat for many years, and Grandparents' climate action – who stated in her obituary that her “lifelong commitment to the environment meant so much to so many.”

Mork made his debut in 1967 with a collection of poems, and in 1969 his first “environmental poem” appeared. After living in Greenland, industrial pollution became the subject of many poems and novels. In 1987 – when the Brundtland Commission presented its report entitled Our Common Future – she wrote The powerful poem “Our Only Sky,” which begins like this:

“Blue is our only sky, green is our only land. This is our only future, and now we leave our mark.”
