Brazil, Football | News Agency: FIFA threatens to ban Brazil

According to the letter, obtained by the Associated Press, FIFA warns that the country's soccer federation could be suspended if it does not heed the call to wait and instead hold early elections to replace Ednaldo Rodriguez. As a football president.

A court in Rio de Janeiro dismissed the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation earlier this month over irregularities in last year's elections. The court annulled everything related to football from last year, hence the decision it took to appoint Rodriguez.

Brazil's two highest courts upheld this ruling last week.

The court's decision in Rio also mandated José Perdez, president of Brazil's highest sports court, to organize new presidential elections within 30 working days. FIFA said earlier that it considered the intervention unnecessary and that FIFA and the International Federation of Association Football in South America (CONMEBOL) would form a committee to discuss the matter in Brazil on January 8.

This case will likely lead to FIFA imposing sanctions on Brazil. In the worst case, FIFA could expel football federations in countries where authorities interfere in this way, while work to achieve a Women's World Cup in 2027 could also be affected.

– We would like to remind the Brazilian Football Confederation that FIFA Member States must act independently and without influence from third parties, including state authorities. FIFA previously confirmed that breaching this could result in sanctions in accordance with FIFA regulations.
