Help 7,000 electric cars

There are more and more electric cars on the roads in Norway. The auto saviors at NAF are well aware of this. In 2022, they had to go out to help the more than 7,000 electric vehicle owners who had problems along the way. This represents an increase of 30 percent over the previous year. Starting problems and a dead battery are some of the most common reasons behind a stall ad.

Many electric car owners are still unaware that there is a small 12-volt battery in their car in addition to the large battery that powers the electric motor. This battery can be discharged in the same way as a starter battery in a petrol car. The small battery also “powers” the car’s electrical system.

On many cars, there must also be power on the 12-volt battery for the door locks to work.

holes often

However, the auto saviors at NAF see one thing that separates electric cars from other vehicles; They have relatively few holes.

Pothole assistance is number two on the list of the most common causes of emergency stops for electric vehicles. This may be due to the fact that electric cars are much heavier than fossil cars.

In addition to the five most common reasons for emergency stops, auto rescuers saw a new trend through 2022: More electric drivers needed help after they ran out of electricity.

Runs empty

More than 200 electric drivers have been helped to reach the charging point. In the past there was only talk of a few dozen electric cars, NAF senior communications adviser Nils Sodal tells Dinside.

He thinks one reason for the increase may be that many electric drivers no longer have range anxiety, and end up misjudging a car’s range before it even charges.

winter problems

– Another reason is that some drivers of new electric cars miscalculate the range in winter. When it’s really cold out, you have to get into the charging station much earlier than in summer, says Sødal

– We also see that unexpected incidents in traffic, such as queues associated with traffic accidents, result in electric drivers needing assistance. When the queue thins out after a morning rush hour accident, our auto rescuers may discover that electric vehicles have run out of power and can’t move forward.
