Lando Norris wins the Miami Grand Prix

The safety car caused drama as 24-year-old Lando Norris took his first Formula 1 win.

He had 15 podium finishes and no wins before Sunday's Miami Grand Prix.

In his 110th race in Formula 1, the McLaren driver took victory. Max Verstappen (26 years old) had to look defeated. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc (26) and Carlos Sainz (29) came in third and fourth.

“I love you all,” Norris says happily on the team radio.

A collision between Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant has caused a stir. Lando Norris had not changed tires yet so he took advantage. He went out on the track again in front of Verstappen.

The question was whether Norris would be able to retain the lead? Yes he did it. Norris drifted further and further away, while Max Verstappen complained over the team radio that the car was hopeless to drive.

-The whole weekend was good. I knew we had speed. Today we had the perfect strategy and were rewarded for our efforts.

– I'm just proud. I stayed at McLaren because I believe in them. Today we succeeded.

McLaren has made a number of improvements to the car ahead of the race in Miami this weekend.

– This bodes well for the excitement of the rest of the season, says Thomas Shea.

– But Norris most likely would not have won without the safety car.

– I hope this is not representative of McLaren's speed, Verstappen smiles.

McLaren is one of the great teams in Formula 1 history, but it has not won a Grand Prix since Daniel Ricciardo in Italy in 2021 – ahead of Norris, meaning a double win.

With pure joy, Lando Norris raced through the cheering McLaren fans after crossing the finish line.

The other drivers came one by one and gave him a good hug.

Lando Norris joined McLaren in 2019 and performed so well that in 2022 the team opted to give him a contract until 2025, the longest contract in Formula 1 at the time.

He only finished sixth at the 2023 World Championships, but had a very strong fall season.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Red Bull will lose its 'miracle man' Adrian Newey after the 2025 season. And in the first race after this news, last season's best teams should be in trouble.

Max Verstappen actually started the Miami race ahead of Charles Leclerc, but there was a hint of drama when Verstappen crashed straight into a cone that had been stuck in the car for a while. But fortunately, he emerged from the accident without any damage to the car.

When Verstappen pitted, it meant Piastri took the lead, and then his teammate Lando Norris. Then came the drama when the safety car had to go onto the track.

Among the celebrities during Sunday's race was former President Donald Trump.

Verstappen won Saturday's sprint race as he wanted. Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez followed closely behind.

The Dutchman won last year's Formula 1 race in Miami. Sergio Perez then secured a double win for Red Bull.
