OSLO/KYIV (VG): 16 people have been killed in Russian attacks on civilians, according to Ukraine’s emergency services. Zelensky describes the attack as one of the most brazen terrorist attacks in European history.
On Tuesday night, Ukraine’s emergency services said 16 people had been confirmed dead and 59 injured. Writes AFP.
On Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote that the Russians had fired missiles at a shopping center in the city of Kremenchug where more than a thousand civilians were staying.
He also shares a video of what will become the mall on fire.
– It is impossible to imagine the number of victims, writes Zelensky.
The president says the mall is not a threat to the Russian military and has no strategic value.
– Today the Russian attack on a shopping center in Kremenzhok is considered one of the most honest terrorist attacks in the history of Europe, he says in his daily speech according to the Associated Press.
Mayor of the city Vitaly Miletsky wrote on his Facebook page that the missile attack took place in a crowded place, and that he was killed and wounded.
Thirteen people have been confirmed dead, says Governor Dmytro Lunin, who expects the number to rise.
On the same day, eight civilians were killed in a Russian attack on the city of Luzichansk in the Luhansk region, according to Governor Serhiy Hajjaj.
The Russians opened fire on a crowd with several Uragan rocket launchers. Civilians were fetching water from a tanker, Hajjaj wrote on Telegram, according to NTB.
People sat under the alarms of planes
Across Ukraine, the plane’s alarm went off several times on Monday as a warning of an upcoming attack. But the warnings are inaccurate and an actual attack is rare in cities far from the front line.
When the alarm bell went off in Kyiv on Monday morning, few people cared. People stayed in outdoor cafes, or continued the work day.
Four months into the Russian war, it has become a kind of normal life in cities far from the front line.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks have escalated in recent days, and on Sunday morning, a residential block and a kindergarten in Kyiv were hit by Russian missiles. At least one person was killed and several others injured.
When VG was on the scene, rescue crews worked to search the apartment building at the same time as the neighborhood was thick with smoke.
Ukraine also attacked Russian targets deep in Russian-controlled territory. An ammunition depot in the Luhansk region came under a major Ukrainian attack on Monday.
condemns the attack
The industrial city of Krementsjuk is located in the province of Poltava, and has a population of just over 200,000. The country’s largest oil refinery is located in the city, and it should have been the target Previous Russian attacks.
The shopping center to be hit appears to be located more than a mile from the oil refinery.
Norway condemns the arbitrary and deliberate Russian attacks affecting the civilian population and civilian infrastructure, Norwegian Foreign Minister Anneken Hoetfeldt wrote in a statement to the NTB.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemns the attack, NTB wrote.
“Once again, we must stress that the parties are subject to international laws to protect civilian and civilian infrastructure,” said Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.
