Russia is preparing to launch a major attack on Slavyansk

Russian forces are moving new units to prepare for attacks on Slaviansk from both Izyum and Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine, according to the daily situation report of the General Staff on Monday.

Izyum is located about 50 kilometers north of Slavyansk. Russian forces took control of Lyman over the weekend.

Russia has concentrated its military forces in eastern Ukraine for weeks. Despite strong Ukrainian opposition, the Russians made slow progress.

Slaviansk and Kramatorsk are located in Donetsk Oblast. Cities constitute the largest urban areas in the part of the Donbas region still controlled by Ukraine.

Channel 2 TV previously reported that Russian forces will do this Try to control an important crossroads Eastern Ukraine.

Pliers predictable maneuver

“If the Russian forces take control of the crossroads south of Izyum, they will shut down the Ukrainian forces that are now fighting hard in the Donbas region,” Arne Bord Dalhaug told Channel 2 TV in early May.

Dalhaug is a retired Lieutenant-General of the Armed Forces. In addition to serving for several years at NATO, he spent three years in the Luhansk region on behalf of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Dallhog thought that Putin would be able to launch a pincer maneuver – an attack from several sides – against the important cities of Kramatorsk and Slaviansk.

There is not much distance between the two cities if Russian forces are to make a breakthrough, says the former chief of defense staff.
