The Denver Nuggets and superstar Nikola Jokic decided the final match against the Miami Heat in five games and became the NBA champion for the first time.
The title was secured with a 94-89 win at home on Monday. Jokic scored 28 points and was relieved after a game in which both teams struggled to score.
– It was a horrible game, we couldn’t shoot, but we finally figured it out. Jokic said, according to TT.
He was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).
– it is good. Mission accomplished, now we can go home, he smiled to ESPN right after the game.
Denver won game one of the Finals series but lost the second. Later, there were three consecutive season-best team wins.
Nuggets coach Michael Malone envisions this year’s title as the start of a dynasty for the Colorado club.
– I have news for everyone out there. We are not satisfied with one (address). He said, “We want more.”
– We’ve accomplished something this franchise hasn’t done before, but we’ve got so many talented young players in the dressing room. I think we just showed with 16 playoff wins what we can do on the bigger stage.
– Pat Riley (Heat President) said something years ago, and I had it on my board when I was the head coach at Sacramento. It’s about evolution in the sport and how you go from nothing to upstart, from novice to winner, from winner to title contender and from title contender to champion. The last step, Malone continued, is from champion to dynasty.
Jokic, the biggest star of the Nuggets, took a slightly different approach in the interview, albeit somewhat jokingly:
– I’m not thinking about next season. The Serb said I would ask the coach to give me a few more weeks off so I could prepare for the season.
He added that he always believed the Denver team could achieve something unique.
It’s not just the starting line-up, it’s the whole team. From the first day I felt something special, with a different energy. I’m not really hopeful, but it gave me hope that we can achieve something.
