SJUSJØEN (Dagbladet): When Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen opens this year’s World Cup season with a 20km race in Kontiolahti in Finland on Tuesday, he’ll be with a very special fist in the bag.

The 30-year-old from Geilo has made huge physical strides in recent seasons. He also focused on professionalizing everyday life. Because when athletes travel across the country and the beach in search of victories, Sjåstad Christiansen has a sauna with him in his bag.

– I grew up with a sauna at home in Geilo, and it was very cold there in the winter. Recently, I have been using it more effectively to recover. You’re sweating a little old-fashioned fun, Sjåstad Christiansen tells Dagbladet.

Dagbladet met the athletes at a press meeting in Sjusjøen before the start of the season. There was widespread agreement that Sjåstad Christiansen’s sauna grip and social media activity had become a topic of conversation within the national team.

– What the Vetle does on the track is totally to my taste. He solved it perfectly and brought it to a level that I think is very exciting. Northug tells Dagbladet that he looks more and more like me in the way he skates.

Top sports are about extremes. You need to stand out a bit and try new things. That’s what Vetle does with this. It will be interesting to see if it pays off. He adds that athletes at this level like to do things like that.

Do you realize that you are being criticized for trying new things?

– There is always someone to interact with. So it was in my time, too. I remember that Bjorndalen was also criticized. There was always someone pointing a finger when looking for small details. This is how top sport should be. It creates headlines and discussions that I think are positive.
