MOSCOW, RUSSIA (ModularPhonesForum – June 4, 2015) — The representatives of the company JSC “Intersoft Eurasia”, a Skolkovo resident that develops innovative products for smartphones, the DO-RA project operator (portable indicator of ionizing radiation with the function of the dosimeter-radiometer), paid a business visit to the EU to further develop their project in terms of miniaturization and standardization.
During 18th to 19th of May 2015, negotiations with American company On Semiconductor and Prague Technical University laboratory specialists took place in Prague, where the issues of designing, prototyping and engineering implementation of electronics reading based on ASIC (SIMS/ASIC) for miniature dosimeter-radiometer DO-RA were discussed and a number of documents were signed. The main accent in the device development process is its integration into existing infrastructure of modern smartphones and mobile phones, that are primarily produced in the South East Asia region.
The possibilities of organizing production of two types of modules were discussed: one as a separate device with BLE interface and another embedded device with i2C interface for installation in mobile devices and various household appliances, automotive electronics.
The modular prototypes are planned to be manufactured and tested at the end of this year with the prospect of industrial production and further expansion of integrative scale. The size of the first modules will not exceed 20 x 20 x 2 cubic millimeters, and in the future it they will be significantly smaller.
Subsequent stage of product development was also set. This includes the use of multi-sensors and readout electronics to increase the sensitivity without increasing the module’s size, and the ability of spectral measurements to determine the type of radionuclide contamination.
The parties discussed the possibility of expanding the range of measured dose rates and radiation types. With a slight complication of the device, this will help to significantly expand the scope of designed device: radiation medicine, APP workers, Ministry of Emergency Measures, within the area of risk as well as the detection of radon and others.
Currently the project team is completing production of a limited batch of cross-platform devices of the model: DO-RA.Ultra-1 for domestic purposes with the function of the dosimeter-radiometer on the solid-state silicon detector (Si), working on wireless Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) e-protocol and the audio protocol, with all mobile devices.
“We see the elevated interest of major foreign players to our residents and their unique innovations. We are also ready for active support of those projects that have gone through the incubation phase of startups, like the DO-RA project in particular, and showed the initiative to enter foreign markets” – said Igor Karavaev, Vice President, and Executive Director of Nuclear Technology Cluster of Skolkovo Foundation.
The company JSC “Intersoft Eurasia” was founded in March 2011 to develop innovative products for smartphones and mainly for the development of portable device DO-RA. In October of the same year the company became a resident of Skolkovo Foundation Nuclear Technology Cluster and in December of the same year, the DO-RA project received its first mini grant from Foundation in the amount of $45,000. In 2013 the company received its second Grand prize of $1 million from the Skolkovo Foundation.
Since the launch of the DO-RA project the product line for different versions of smartphones, the server part and construction documentation for industrial production of the DO-RA devices on the basis of Geiger-Mueller (GM) at the European standard IPC, increased. Additionally, we developed a family of mobile apps DO-RA.Soft-GM with user interface in 23 languages for mobile platforms: iOS, Android, WP7, JavaME, BlackBerry, Symbian, Bada and also for OS: Windows/Linux/MacOS. All applications DO-RA.Soft are available for free download at the respective online stores.
Presently, JSC “Intersoft Eurasia” is the proud owner of 52 patents and certificates in Russia, USA, Japan, China, South Korea, India, the EU and other countries.
By now the company has entered into a stage of active project development in Russia, the USA and South Korea. It is searching for partners and investors for production of DO-RA devices and international distribution channels.
The developers of JSC “Intersoft Eurasia” believe that further miniaturisation of the device (electronic reading and DO-RA system management) in the near future will help to integrate several sub-modules with different functionalities based on the standard of Project ARA modules, which is the next step in the modular device development.
About “Skolkovo” Foundation:
The foundation of the New Technologies Development and Commercialization Centre “Skolkovo” is a non-profit organization established at the initiative of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in September 2010. The aim of the Foundation is to mobilize resources of the Russian Federation in the field of modern applied investigation, creation of an enabling environment for the implementation of scientific research in the five priority areas of technological development: energy and energy efficiency, space, biomedicine, nuclear and computer technologies. The project involves the creation of the Skolkovo Institute of science and technology (Skolkovotech), research institutes, business incubator, technology transfer and commercialization, representative offices of foreign companies and R&D centres, residential areas and social infrastructure, as well as the subsequent distribution of an effective template to other innovative regions of Russia. The activities of the “Skolkovo” innovation center are governed by a special law, which provides its residents with favourable economic conditions.

About the project:
The idea of DO-RA project emerged on March 29, 2011 after writing the article on “Our Radioactive World”, dedicated to the accident at Fukushima in Japan. At the time there was no hybrid of a mobile phone, smartphone and dosimeter-radiometer that could be utilised by DO-RA device, which soon after acquired a Russian patent based on mobile phone/smartphone. In fact, the uniqueness of the DO-RA device is that it has no analogues, hence the Russian patent for its utility. Today Vladimir Elin has a priority on the novelty and reproduction of the utility model of the DO-RA device. The priority is dated 24 June 2011 and is protected by Russian patent No. 109625.
The name DO-RA is a combination of the first two letters of the words ‘dosimeter-radiometer’. Abbreviations are the same in Russian and English, that gives additional recognition of the device’s name.
