Rima 1000 price | Rima outperforms Kiwi and Extra in a key price test: prices of some goods rose sharply

Nettavisen’s extensive price check shows that prices for many items have risen sharply since June:

  • Superchips: +45.4 percent
  • Blue Castello: +15 percent
  • Cervelates: +14.4 percent
  • Poached mackerel: +10.1 percent
  • Go for yogurt in the morning: +9.2 percent

At the same time, it’s clear that some items have become much cheaper – which is good news for the overall amount.

See an overview of all 60 items below

Surprising result

There are a total of 60 items in the cart and Nettavisen has now checked the prices for September. Of these, 36 cases were also examined in June and July. The result here will surprise many.

Because the shopping cart is actually cheaper in September than in June. The price development of the 36 items was as follows:

  • June: 1346.95
  • July: 1380.90
  • September: 1336.00

Shopping cart prices rose sharply from June to July. But then prices fell sharply again.

This means that the shopping cart is about a tenth cheaper in September than in June.

The fish decides

There is one category of goods in particular that gives this result.

– It may seem as if fish has become a new attraction for chains, says grocery expert Ivar F. Petersen in Alo’s analysis.

He points out that all chains launched campaigns after the holidays to reduce fish prices. Before meat was the important bait, this may have changed.

-With so much emphasis on health in society, fish may have taken over this function. In addition, seafood export and import prices fell significantly in July and August, Petersen says.

Cheaper than before

It was not only the prices of fishery products that fell. Nettavisen’s overview shows that many items are cheaper now than in June:

  • Fresh salmon: -34.7%
  • Broccoli: – 34.1 percent
  • Fish and Crisp Gourmet: – 12.8%
  • Red pepper: – 11.7 percent
  • Dolmio Classico Pasta Sauce: -5.5 percent

Matched prices

Of the 60 items in September’s shopping cart, only five had different prices for the three chains we examined.

Rima 1000 is the cheapest type of red pepper. Rima and Kiwi are cheaper than Extra in Pasta, Tomato and Pink Lady Apple Sauce. The additives are cheaper than the other two in Twinings Earl Gray tea.

When Nettavisen also checked prices in June, there were many similar prices. Then 56 out of 59 prices were identical, and the Kiwi price was only €5 cheaper than the Rema 1000 in the shopping cart at NOK 2207.93.

In other words, things other than price may determine where you shop.

– A job with the Norwegian Competition Authority

Ivar F. Pettersen believes that identical prices should be investigated.

Read also: This is how you are monitored on Facebook: – Very closely

– There is a very high degree of price equality. He says the Norwegian Competition Authority should take a closer look at this.

-With only a few major players, it is always important to look for indicators of what might be called harmonious coexistence. Petersen says such behavior should be monitored by the Norwegian Competition Authority.

In Norway, there are three players that dominate, so to speak, the entire grocery market.

The Norwegian group is the largest. They have series like Kiwi, Meny, Joker, and Spar. The second largest company is Coop with chains such as Extra, Prix, Mega and Obs. The third major player is Rima 1000.

– Lots of peace and harmony

Equal prices can be the result of intense competition, but they are also the result of a lot of peace and harmony, says Petersen.

In Nettavisen’s September basket, 55 out of 60 prices are identical for the three series. Petersen believes investigations should be conducted.

– The Competition Authority should investigate whether there is a situation where chains have what is called an “implicit agreement” in professional language – a “silent agreement,” he says.

– This does not mean that the two parties have reached an illegal written agreement. But there can be a common understanding that one is competing to a certain point. There may also be a mutual understanding that competition should take place within certain limits, Petersen says.

Petersen asserts:

The equality of prices is not evidence in itself, but rather it is one of the many reasons for checking prices and margins on an ongoing basis.

– Real competition

Rima 1000 comments on the same prices as follows:

Competition in grocery stores is high, and the battle for the cheapest is a real battle. Therefore, prices will sometimes be very similar, says Rema 1000’s category and purchasing manager, Line Aarnes.

Harald Christiansen, communications director at Extra, believes that similar prices are the result of fierce competition.

– This is the result of intense competition as the chains follow each other closely, he says.

New Zealanders believe they are leading the way in price suppression:

– When Kiwi drives prices, others tend to follow suit, says communications consultant Nora Helgesen.

This is how strings comment on test results:

Rima 1000: – Rema 1000 should be the cheapest grocery in Norway, and we are pleased that the result reflects this, says Category and Purchasing Manager, Line Aarnes.

– There is not much that separates us, as was the case in the vast majority of tests, she says.

– What these tests don’t show are all the good offers and discounts you get in our stores, Arnis points out.

kiwi: – This year, Kiwi clearly showed who is the price driver in Norway, and we won all the VG food fairs in 2023, says communications consultant, Nora Helgesen.

– Of course we must always be the cheapest, and the price of paprika has already been adjusted. It also refers to the discount and rewards plans that the chain has.

Extras: Extra was the cheapest in the previous price test. This price test is a snapshot of what prices have actually changed, says communications director Harald Christiansen.

– He says that the test confirms once again that there are no differences in prices between the chains.

Christiansen also points out that Extra has discount and rewards plans.
