The series is based on the dark story of 32-year-old Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. The latter's mother deceived the whole world for several years with the tragic and painful, but unreal, history of her daughter's illness.
In June 2015, Dee Dee was murdered, and in the same year her daughter was sentenced to ten years in prison for complicity in the murder. She was only 24 years old at the time. Now, eight years later, the daughter will be released.

The mother claimed, among other things, that her daughter had leukemia, epileptic seizures and chromosomal disorders, and that the daughter had always been in a wheelchair even though she could already walk on her own.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard didn't know her age for a long time either, and her mother claimed she was four years younger than her.
For several years, the local community helped the family and, among other things, received a charitablely built house after their previous home was said to have been destroyed in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The mother also claimed that all of her daughter's medical papers were lost in the hurricane.
The community's sympathy continued until the fateful day in 2015, when Dee Dee was murdered in her home in Missouri. She was 48 years old when she died.
He received early release
The murder was planned by Blanchard and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas “Nick” Godejohn. It was the boyfriend who carried out the murder while Gypsy Rose hid in the bathroom.
According to Godejohn, it was Blanchard who was responsible for most of the planning and was the one who asked him to kill the mother.
While Gypsy Rose was sentenced to ten years in prison for complicity, Godejohn received life in prison without the possibility of parole.
