Türkiye, Sweden | The Turkish National Assembly is scheduled to vote on Sweden's membership in NATO on Tuesday

This is what a source in the National Assembly told Reuters. Bloomberg It was announced earlier Monday afternoon that the vote would take place this week.

The National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee has given the green light for Sweden's NATO membership in space over Christmas.

If the National Assembly also agrees, withdrawing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's name is the last remaining formal step.

Erdogan made Sweden's ratification of NATO membership conditional on the US Congress' approval at the same time of Turkey's request to obtain F-16 fighter jets.

Turkey and Hungary are the only two NATO countries that have not yet agreed to Sweden's membership in the defense alliance. Sweden's membership was not included in the spring plans that the Hungarian government sent to the National Assembly earlier in January.

All current NATO member states must vote yes to accept a new member state.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 led to both Finland and Sweden choosing to apply for NATO membership. The former was accepted as a member of the Union in April last year, but Turkey and then Hungary opposed the annexation of Sweden and demanded that certain conditions be met.

The Turkish government believes that Sweden is harboring and protecting Kurdish groups and individuals that Turkey considers terrorists.
